About half an hour after seeing the first crested newt of the year  returning to my garden ponds, I went back out and saw a nice male smooth newt approaching my smallest pond">"> MORG40555.8349305556

thanks for posting your find and the pic.
what time of day was that?

i spotted a female palmate possibly heading towards the pond in the rain late last night.
just as in your pic, it was poised on a mossy rock.

in my larger pond i also saw representatives of all the UK newt species and 2 common frogs. also 1 RT hopping overland nearby.

in addition, spied several Palmate males in the smaller pool.


all animals sighted were going about their business with vigour id say.


by the way, its great to find another PUNK RAUK newt fan here!

Sex Pistols, Crass etc etc!
and Urodeles forever.


reflecting both sides of the hyphen in your SIGNATURE;

here in GLOS, theres a multi-racial punk group called DEMOB. know them? they released a classic single "NO ROOM FOR YOU" in (i think) 1981.
a punk rock song laced with pathos - quite extraordinary.

its as rare and beautiful as a sand lizard!

keep the Smooth and other newt postings coming mate. they are in short supply on RAUK.

Hey Ben, I went out to my pond last night and saw 2 smooth newts, still no idea where they have come from.

glad the ponds doing well already (amphibian-wise).
were they M/F and did they show breeding cond signs? the vulgs ive seen here so far dont.

though the crested/palmate males HAVE put their "pulling suits" on.

 Demob have now split, but I agree no room for you is a classic

No more newt activity seen here these last few nights, but its cooled down  again and isnt very damp.

Im sure there will be more activity next rainy night we have

sorry to hear about your frog fatalities. ive seen dead floaters too. though thankfully not in my ponds.
